Awards & PressMagic 101.9 Leading Woman in BusinessA New Orleans native, Dixie Louviere graduated from The University of New Orleans with a bachelor’s degree and her masters in art. As a teenager, Dixie worked in her parent’s jewelry store. During her days in college, Dixie realized that she loved the retail business, so she opened D. L. Creations in Metairie prior to Katrina. D.L Creations provides women the opportunity to shop at a store that has all of the fun stuff women love, jewelry, purses, t-shirts and accessories. Business was going well for Dixie and then Katrina paid a visit. The business was completely destroyed. With the holiday season just around the corner, Dixie realized that she had to get her business up and running as soon as possible. Dixie moved the store to another location and opened again for business by Christmas. D.L. Creations in Metairie now with Sterling Silver, gold jewelry, custom Design jewelry by Dixie, jewelry repair, handbags, sandals and clothing. Dixie is now studying gemology to further her career in jewelry design. Dixie looks forward seeing women everyday in her store. Congratulations, Dixie! Richard T Liddicoat Scholarship Recipient for GemologyFeb. 9, 2007 – New Orleans resident Dixie Louviere was becoming a successful jewelry store owner – until Hurricane Katrina destroyed her shop in August 2005. Now, with the help of a Richard T. Liddicoat (RTL) Distance Education Scholarship, made possible by the support of many RTL Fund donors, she is getting a chance to rebuild her dream. Louviere learned to love the jewelry business as she watched her father work at his bench. “I completed GIA’s Pearl and Bead Stringing course in high school and was ready to move on to diamonds or gemology, but my parents decided to close the store,” she said. She opened her own jewelry store, DL Jewelry Creations, in 2002 and planned to enroll in GIA’s Graduate Diamonds course in early 2006. But then Katrina struck and the levees failed. “My shop was destroyed, and I had to start over again – forgoing my plans of enrolling in GIA because I did not know how business would be in post-Katrina New Orleans,” said Louviere. Business is returning as the city rebuilds, and Louviere believes GIA credentials will give her the edge she needs to succeed. “With a diploma from the Institute, I will be taken more seriously by customers and others in the industry. I consider it a true honor to receive this scholarship for GIA’s Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma program,” she said.
